STRESS ON READING: V.R. Bhoopalan, District Judge, Madurai, delivering a talk on World Book Day at the District Central Library.

MADURAI: Libraries remain a sacred space, enlightening not only the mind by quelling ignorance and promoting the social and cultural progress of humanity, but also give a chance to get an insight into the best of minds in the form of printed words, said V.R. Bhoopalan, District Judge, Madurai.

He was delivering a talk on the occasion of ‘World Book and Copyright Day’ organised here on Monday by District Central Library and Book Readers’ Circle, Madurai. The Judge’s speech touched upon the genesis of various days such as May Day and International Women’s Day and their significance. He particularly asked the young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

Earlier in the meeting a young poet delivered a poem highlighting how eminent philosophers and intellectuals such as Karl Marx, Frederick Engels and B.R. Ambedkar made libraries their first home. He also referred to Bharathidasan, Bharathiar and Surada (a poet who is known for his similes), who, he said, had stressed the importance of libraries and inculcating reading habit.

Madurai-based poet R. Ravi and R. Sakthivel, First Grade Librarian, District Central Library, Madurai, were present.
